The opportunityThe Associate, Responsible Investing is a well-rounded professional, capable of supporting a range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives across industries and assets classes (public and private markets). The Associate is an ESG generalist with an understanding of how ESG may impact investments outcomes, including climate change and impact considerations. The Associate will support existing ESG initiatives as well as engage in developing new ESG initiatives.Responsible Investing is part of Total Fund Management and supports the integration of material ESG considerations into the investment life cycle across public and private markets. We are also responsible for implementing Teachers’ Net Zero strategy, and supporting corporate engagement activities.Who you’ll work withThe Associate will join one of Canada’s leading Responsible Investing teams at a critical time of growth. The RI team has seven members and works closely with the Corporate Governance team.The Associate will work mainly with the Responsible Investing team, within the Total Fund Management department and will interact on a frequent basis with investment teams.What you’ll do
- Benchmark and identify best practices in sustainability in both public and private companies
- Support ESG due diligence for private equity deals – desktop research, review of consultant reports, participation in meetings with deal teams and consultants
- Provide research, analytics and communication materials to support any of the evolving ESG integration, climate change and impact strategies
- Conduct research and knowledge transfer on various ESG topics that could include any of the following climate change and energy transition, impact measurement, circular economy, water use/risk, human capital management, natural capital, sustainable development goals and others as needed
- Monitors emerging ESG/sustainability standards and norms to support Ontario Teachers’ and portfolio companies reporting
- Review and recommend emerging ESG tools, resources, and platforms for use at Ontario Teachers’
What you’ll need
- 2 to 5 years’ related experience – responsible investing, sustainability consulting, ESG analysis, investment analyst with ESG focus, etc.
- Minimum Bachelor; Masters degree in engineering, environment, climate science, finance or other relevant field an asset
- Completion of the CFA (or underway) would be an asset
- Knowledge of and passion for ESG and responsible investing issues, including climate change and impact investing
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (both oral and written) – particularly an ability to understand and communicate technical ESG material to investment professionals
- Knowledge of ESG data and rating providers, as well as financial platforms such as Bloomberg terminals, a plus
- Demonstrated ability to apply judgment in determining materiality in the decision-making process
- Familiarity with investment-related concepts, such as capital markets and fundamental company analysis an asset
- Works well independently or as a member of a team
- Highly adaptable, flexible and open to new ideas
- Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities
