The opportunity

As the Director of Transition Economy Design (TED) at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), you will play a vital role in helping design and drive the organization’s efforts related to energy transition and adjacent ESG topics across the Transition Economy. Your responsibilities will include helping navigate, convene, and scale efforts in close collaboration with key internal stakeholders to support the long-term success of OTPP’s sustainable investing objectives.

The Director is a well-rounded professional, with a thorough understanding of how the Transition Economy will impact investment outcomes, and capable of supporting a range of ESG initiatives across industries and assets classes.

Sustainable Investing is an integral group within Total Fund Management (TFM), a department within the Office of CIO that works to create synergies, combining both sides of our balance sheet to effectively and efficiently allocate resources (both capital and risk) across various asset classes and investing departments. With a holistic view of the overall portfolio spanning asset allocation and funding, TFM is able to take a perspective on how plan resources can be effectively utilized to support the investment portfolio. In this vein, Sustainable Investing is an important tool in effecting the investment strategy.

Who you’ll work with

  • The Director will join one of Canada’s leading Sustainable Investing teams at a time of growth and evolution of our strategy to stay at the forefront of emerging best practice.
  • The Director will work with all members of the Sustainable Investing team with an emphasis on designing and driving the organization’s efforts related to energy transition and adjacent ESG topics across the Transition Economy.
  • They will collaborate with colleagues across the TFM department. They will also frequently interact with investment teams and portfolio companies, and Finance and Communication on external reporting.

What you’ll do

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive Transition Economy plan. Work to be completed in close collaboration with key internal stakeholders including the Sustainable Investing team, asset classes and related functional departments.
  • Identify opportunities and innovative solutions across the Transition Economy including clean technology, biodiversity, social/environmental impact, and other sectors and sustainable investing topics.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders by convening investment teams, and other relevant departments, to foster collaboration and alignment on Transition Economy initiatives.
  • Engage with external stakeholders to share best practices and collaborate on sustainability-related initiatives.
  • Scale Transition Economy efforts across the Fund where applicable
  • Work directly with OTPP Climate team to support climate-related risks and opportunities and program execution across OTPP’s investment portfolio.
  • Work in partnership with OTPP’s ESG Integration team in support of the reporting framework to monitor emerging ESG/sustainability standards and norms to support OTPP’s and portfolio companies reporting, as required.
  • Work in partnership with OTPP’s Corporate Governance team in support of emerging topics, as required.
  • Stay abreast of global trends and developments in the Transition Economy, critical ESG topics and sustainable finance.
  • Building sector/theme expertise and a network to bring new ideas and expertise to OTPP teams

What you’ll need

  • Minimum 8 years of related experience in Transition Economy topics and/or investment related role.
  • Extensive experience in sustainable investing, energy transition or related fields within the financial services or institutional investment industry.
  • A keen interest in ESG and energy transition issues and an understanding of their implications on companies, boards, and investors.
  • Understanding of ESG in company and/or investment analysis and corporate engagement.
  • Experience in dealing with Transition Economy and Sustainable Investing issues in an investor relations capacity would be an alternative to the above.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable investing principles, ESG integration, and relevant industry frameworks and standards (e.g., TCFD, PRI).
  • Familiarity with emerging trends, technologies, and policy developments in the energy transition and climate change space.
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to identify investment opportunities and assess risks.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and influence internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with the ability to drive change and foster a culture of sustainability within the organization.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to promoting sustainable investing practices and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • Minimum Bachelor, Masters preferred, degree in technical field such as engineering, climate science, environmental science, or another relevant field. CFA/FRM would be an asset.
  • Ability to travel domestically or internationally, as required.
