Nuveen is the investment management arm of TIAA with more than $1.1 trillion in assets under management. It is the 15th largest asset manager, serving more than 1,000 institutional clients in 40 countries with specialist knowledge across a wide array of asset classes, including Fixed Income, Equities and Alternatives. Nuveen has been an active impact investor for more than three decades, and over the last eight years has deployed over $1 billion in equity in relevant impact investments.
Nuveen’s private equity impact strategy focuses on two primary themes – Inclusive Growth and Resource Efficiency – that broadly target the twin global challenges of income inequality and climate change. The group aims to generate strong, risk-adjusted returns for its investors while concurrently achieving important social and environmental outcomes aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, by investing in companies that drive efficiency, productivity, and scale in sustainable development for underserved people and the planet. Inclusive Growth investments support the low-income consumer and small and middle market businesses in sectors like financial services, healthcare and education globally with a focus on emerging markets, while Resource Efficiency investments enable disruptive businesses in sectors like energy efficiency, green building technology, recycling, waste-to-energy, and sustainable packaging. The group closed a $218 million fund for its first third-party private equity fund in February 2022.
Nuveen’s Global Private Equity Impact team currently consists of ten dedicated team members, who are responsible for making direct private equity investments as both a minority investor in later-stage growth equity financings, as well as selectively as a control investor in lower-middle market buyouts. The group’s investments are truly global in nature, with a portfolio currently comprised of companies in both emerging and developed markets. In addition to its primary focus on direct investments, the team also manages a targeted private equity fund investment program on behalf of TIAA.
