Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, one of the world’s leading global law firms with offices in strategic hubs of commerce, law, and government across North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, is seeking an experienced Impact Investing Principal to help spearhead its efforts in expanding its strong brand in the impact investing space. The Firm is very active in assisting impact driven clients launch private investment funds, form management firms, engage in impact investment transactions, negotiate grants and loans to facilitate impact investing and technical support and many other projects within and adjacent to the impact investing space. Impact investing projects cross multiple practice areas of the firm, including Tax & Exempt Organizations, Investment Management and Commercial Business Transactions, among others. The Firm is dedicated to serving impact driven clients, including fund managers, charitable institutions using market mechanisms to accomplish social good, and others in the impact investing space to achieve their mission and commercial -objectives and is looking for the right person to help lead and coordinate these efforts.

This position can reside in any one of our US offices (Boston, Century City, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orange County, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, or Washington, DC) with a hybrid in-office/remote working schedule.

Role And Responsibilities

The Impact Investing Principal will be both a client-facing and an internal lawyer-facing role, facilitating the growth of the Firm’s impact investing presence in the marketplace and client relationships as well as helping ensure that impact investing clients experience timely and cost-effective legal services. Among the responsibilities of the Impact Investing Principal will be the following:

  • Creating business plans, marketing strategies and original investment content to differentiate the Firm and position its services in the marketplace
  • Acting as an effective representative of the Firm and its lawyers with clients, prospects and consultants
  • Arranging and attending pitches with potential impact investing clients
  • Attending and presenting at conferences specific to the impact investing industry
  • Working with the Firm’s marketing department to facilitate enhancement of the Firm’s brand in the impact investing space
  • Forming and leading an impact investing industry team within the Firm that includes lawyers from various practice areas and disciplines relevant to impact investing
  • Sourcing lawyers in various practice areas for specific client projects
  • Coordinating and successfully delivering multiple complex projects concurrently
  • Demonstrating the required behaviors, knowledge and skills to manage the delivery of assigned projects
  • Developing and maintaining end-to-end plans to manage project timeline, scope, deliverables and resources
  • Coordinating overall project communications, measuring progress and monitoring performance and managing risk and issue resolution—anticipating, documenting and escalating as appropriate
  • Formulating budgets and tracking and communicating accrued fees and costs as compared to budgets
  • Effectively interfacing with clients, lawyer teams and other key stakeholders regarding project deliverables, status, issues and risks
  • Managing project staff (directly or indirectly); providing leadership, direction, guidance and support in driving toward expected project outcomes
  • Identifying and monitoring cross-project interdependencies; developing and proposing solutions to resolve resource conflicts

Qualifications

  • Experience with legal processes generally and working with lawyers from various practice areas
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal and communication skills; effective communication (both written and oral) at all levels throughout an organization
  • Ability to gain commitment and consensus through persuasion and negotiation and work collaboratively across teams to reach common goals
  • Solid decision-maker that takes responsibility for projects, people and actions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent time management
  • Skilled relationship manager, adept at building a network of contacts inside and outside an organization
  • Business results orientation; emphasizes high quality, productivity and stakeholder satisfaction
  • Deep, personal commitment to impact investing and extensive knowledge of the impact investing industry
  • A strong academic background including a post-secondary degree; ideally this also will include a post-graduate qualification
  • Substantial (10+ years) financial industry experience, with deep investment knowledge and involving the management of complex projects, preferably in large, global institutions
  • Strong (5+ years) experience specifically in the impact investing space, preferably gained in a relevant capacity such as a consultant, product manager, portfolio manager or similar position
  • Effective marketing strategy and communication skills
  • Strong personal presence and compelling communication skills
  • Demonstrated business judgment skills and strong analytical skills
  • Originality in thinking and the ability to bring new ideas and creative solutions to discussions
  • A positive, collegial attitude and a high level of professionalism

For postings in Orange County, Los Angeles and Century City, the salary range for this job posting is: $130,865 – $209,383

For positions in NY, the salary range for this job posting is

$142,244 – $227,591

The base salary or hourly wage range for this position will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, and market factors. The final salary or hourly wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances. Additionally, salary or hourly wages may be only part of the total compensation package. The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
