The Role

Boston Common Asset Management (BCAM) is seeking a motivated Engagement Summer Associate to join our inclusive and collaborative engagement team. They will report to BCAM’s Director of U.S. Shareholder Engagement, supporting the firm’s efforts to engaging portfolio companies on their DEI goals and targets.

The Engagement Summer Associate role is a paid, full-time, fully remote position for ten weeks during the summer of 2023. While the summer associate can be located outside the state of Massachusetts, we will require them to work from 9 am to 5 pm ET.

This 10-week internship will be an excellent opportunity for a student interested in learning more about corporate ESG policies and shareholder engagement. By the end of the summer, the Engagement Summer Associate will have a deep understanding of corporate board and workplace DEI practices. They will also have the chance to connect with team members and summer associates across all business areas at BCAM.

Responsibilities

The ESG Engagement Summer Associate will look at the companies Boston Common engaged in 2023 on workplace DEI practices. They will assess the strides these companies have made towards their DEI goals, research new workplace DEI practices, and develop a progress report. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Research & Data Collection

  • Perform desktop research to assess what progress portfolio companies have made towards their DEI goals and targets
  • Utilize 3rd party research providers to identify new information on Workplace DEI practices
  • Conduct outreach to companies that did not respond to Boston Common’s 2023 DEI survey to encourage response
  • Engage with new companies that were not contacted previously to expand data collection

Reporting

The Engagement Summer Associate will aggregate and analyze firm- and portfolio-level DEI data to develop external reports on the following:

  • Board Diversity Metrics (gender, racial)
  • Disaggregated Workplace Demographics Disclosures
  • Gender and Racial Pay Equity
  • DEI Workplace Goals & Targets Setting and Progress
  • Employee Engagement/Affinity Groups

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a mature, trustworthy student with high energy and an enthusiasm for expanding their knowledge of DEI and/or ESG topics. Ideally, the student will possess the following qualities:

  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with a straightforward approach
  • Completion of tasks in an accurate and timely fashion
  • Effective independent contributor that also excels as a team player in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems, as well as think about the next steps and implications in a process
  • Enthusiasm for and knowledge of financial markets and sustainable investing are a plus

Compensation

Compensation will depend on the student’s academic year. In addition to an hourly wage, BCAM also provides:
