Mandate
The role is Director or Managing Director (depending on candidate background and qualifications), in the Sustainable Finance Group, which brings together capabilities from across the bank to mobilize financing for a sustainable future. The group is responsible for raising capital and providing financing for clients pursuing sustainable outcomes, offering advisory services and managing BMO’s impact investment fund.
BMO’s goal is to build a global leading position in sustainable finance to support an aim to “Boldly Grow the Good in Business and Life” to support a thriving economy, sustainable future and inclusive society. Several strategies will be deployed across the bank and externally to achieve this goal with an important initiative being the creation of an impact investing fund to find and scale solutions to the sustainability problems faced by clients. This seed fund was announced this summer with $350 million in capital. BMO’s is undertaking an effort to enhance its investment activity in earlier-stage tech companies that are creating and/or improving existing energy and resource processes and technologies.
This fund will be focused on investing in earlier stage companies that will play an important role in several investment territories:
- Clean tech: Technologies that help our clients reduce the environmental impact of their operations
- B2B solutions with an environmental thesis: Solutions that drive environmental impact reduction through services and solutions that reduce waste, etc.
- Social B2B solutions: Companies providing scalable solutions to help client companies improve their social impact on employees, communities and customers.
- ESG measurement solutions: Companies creating solutions to help clients track and demonstrate their impact.
- Pure play’ investments that can help catalyze a sector: Solutions that can help with transformative change in a sector from an ESG, or clean perspective.
- The portfolio will be expected to generate a positive rate of return, as well as providing insight, knowledge sharing, and impact into BMO’s other investment activities as well as across its client base.
BMO is looking for a Director or Managing Director to help drive this effort and views this individual as a key member of the start-up team, who over time, will drive deal flow, identify opportunities, and grow and build the BMO team and presence. This requires an individual with an entrepreneurial mindset, and someone who is willing to roll-up his or her sleeves and take on responsibilities outside of the formal ‘role definition’.
The successful candidate will bring deep experience in the sustainability space, impact investing, cleantech and/or energy technology venture investing. This includes structuring rounds of primary financing and involvement with start-up companies, including the ability to lead deal teams and execute transactions start to finish, while also leveraging industry relationships and sector expertise to originate investment opportunities. Investment opportunities of this type are often identified through a top-down, sector-by-sector analysis allowing the team to proactively identify emerging technologies, services, or disruptive businesses where BMO can be a preferred capital partner.
From a sector perspective, individuals with venture investing experience in “cleantech”, broader impact investing, and broader sustainability or ‘energy transition’ experience will be considered. A deep spike in one or more industry sub-sector, with a desire to cover the mandate broadly is strongly preferred. An existing network to begin sourcing opportunities is preferred, but not required. Board governance capabilities are essential.
S/he will bring a strong investment track record in energy and, importantly, will seamlessly integrate into BMO’s culture. The ability to collaborate across the functions, share knowledge, and contribute to BMO’s broader goal to embed this in bank culture is essential, including working across geographies, other groups within the bank, and with portfolio companies or clients. The sharing of knowledge and insight gleaned from the impact fund is a core value driver for the effort.
Education and Experience required:
- Principal investing experience in private equity, venture capital, or corporate venture
- Minimum 5-7+ years of transactional and/or investing experience, with likely 8-10+ years of total career experience
- Early career experience in investment banking, consulting, technology, or corporate
- MBA or Advanced Degreed
