Manager/Senior Manager, ESG Strategy & Risk
BCI
Victoria, BC
With $211.1 billion in assets under management (AUM), British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is one of the largest institutional investors in Canada. Since its inception in 2000, BCI has grown significantly and is now regarded as one of the world’s most influential financial institutions, with a diverse and global mix of assets. The organization has positioned itself as an active, in-house asset manager with sophisticated strategies operating within an increasingly complex investment environment. Over the past 10 years, BCI has more than doubled its assets under management and headcount to over 600 employees and opened new offices in New York and London, UK.
Recognizing that robust in-house investment risk management capabilities are key to making informed investment decisions, BCI has and continues to invest in building a world-class Investment Strategy & Risk (ISR) function. Part of the ISR department, the ESG Strategy & Risk team has a mandate to take a top-down and bottom-up view of markets and the economy to quantify and evaluate systemic ESG risks and opportunities, their implications on portfolios, asset classes, client portfolios and BCI’s total fund. The department also supports private market ESG integration efforts, conducting due diligence to integrate material ESG risks and opportunities into financial models and communicating results to investment teams and management.
Due to continued growth of the team, the opportunity now exists for a new Manager or Senior Manager, ESG Strategy & Risk to join this award-winning team in a key leadership role. Reporting to the Head of ESG Strategy & Risk, this role will play an integral part in leading a team that is developing and driving the implementation of BCI’s Climate Action Plan, including supporting net-zero objectives throughout the portfolio, corporate ESG strategy and total portfolio ESG risk and opportunity framework. They will lead and work on investment initiatives across the organization, including developing ESG integration strategies in asset classes, conducting total portfolio carbon footprinting quantification, and advising the Management Investment Committee on ESG risks for private market investments.
As part of an evolving and growing function, the Manager/Senior Manager will have a chance to fundamentally impact BCI’s approach to systemic ESG risks and opportunities with a focus on climate change. They will work internally and externally to develop new approaches that translate long-term macroeconomic insight into useful information. They will have a chance to work with a team at the cutting edge of working to understand what is required to address pressing global sustainability challenges in the financial sector and translate data and analytics into actionable insight for investment decisions.
The ideal candidate is an experienced corporate finance professional who combines a deep background in technical research, financial modeling and strategy development with ideally a background in investments or capital markets. This experience could have been gained in a consulting/advisory capacity or in a similar risk or financial analysis role in an investment, financial services or infrastructure/PE firm. Strong communication, relationship building and influencing skills will be critical in establishing strong relationships with the Investment teams while also working closely with other teams within the Investment Risk function.
There is no template for the work of the ESG Strategy & Risk team. The mandate is to figure out how to solve problems and build processes to implement BCI’s in-house solutions. The Manager/Senior Manager will need to be creative, a strategic thinker and intellectually curious about the pressing sustainability challenges facing global long-term investors.
Based in Victoria, this is a unique opportunity to join a world-class team leading the development of climate change and sustainable finance solutions for one of the fastest growing and influential global investment organizations in the market.
